Mountaineering in Norway
Discovering the Lyngen Alps with a private guide
Want to climb spectacular Norwegian summits? Join me in the Lyngen Alps for unforgettable mountaineering expeditions! This magnificent range offers sharp ridges, snow couloirs, and rocky routes in a breathtaking Arctic setting.
The Lyngen Alps: an exceptional mountaineering playground
Welcome to the Lyngen Alps, a hidden gem of Northern Norway! This range resembles the French Alps with its beautiful ridge climbs, snow slopes, and rocky summits. But here, you’re truly in pioneer territory : mountaineering is still brand new in this region!
A pioneer adventure
This is where this experience becomes truly unique: we are among the first to develop mountaineering in the Lyngen Alps. Unlike the overcrowded French Alps with their mountain huts and marked trails, here there’s none of that. No staffed refuges, no crowds, just you, me, and the mountains!
It’s a bit like what mountaineers experienced 200 years ago in the Écrins massif: real discovery, real adventure. You’ll be part of the rare rope teams to climb certain routes, in a completely pristine and solitary environment. The contrast with overcrowded massifs is striking.
How do the outings work?
Mountaineering expeditions are mainly done as day trips, with a 2-day option for longer or more distant peaks. Here’s how it works:
Day trips
- Early start: We meet early in the morning to maximize our time in the mountains
- Ascent: We traverse a ridge, a snow couloir or a rocky route, a glacier depending on the chosen summit
- Summit: We enjoy the exceptional view at the top!
- Descent and return: Descent and end of day
2-day trips with bivouac
For longer expeditions, we go for two days:
- Day 1: Ascent to the bivouac (at the base or at the summit depending on the circuit)
- Day 2: Early departure for the final ascent, then descent and return
- Night at bivouac: Night in a tent (or Hytta, a traditional Norwegian cabin), in an exceptional setting
The classic peaks of the Lyngen Alps
The Lyngen Alps offer numerous “classic” summits that we can climb together. Some are done via elegant ridge climbs, others through snow couloirs, and still others via rocky routes. There’s even a summit, Jiehkkevárri, the highest point of the Lyngen Alps that they call “the Mont Blanc of the North”, a particularly prestigious climb.

When to come?
The summer season
Mountaineering in the Lyngen Alps is practiced from June to August. It’s the ideal complement to winter activities! While the ski season ends, the mountaineering season begins, allowing you to enjoy the massif year-round.
In summer, the days are long, the weather is milder, and conditions are perfect for climbing these Norwegian peaks.

What excites me about mountaineering in the Lyngen Alps is really this pioneer aspect. We’re discovering mountaineering in this region, and it’s a bit like what the first mountaineers experienced two centuries ago in the Alps.
Imagine: no staffed refuges, no trails blazed by thousands of hikers before you, no queues at the summit. Just us, the maps, and the unknown. We don’t always know exactly what awaits us, and that’s what makes the experience so authentic and memorable.
It’s the perfect counterbalance to the French Alps where everything is marked, known, overcrowded. Here, you experience a real adventure of discovery!
A massif that resembles the French Alps
If you know the French Alps, you’ll feel on familiar ground in the Lyngen Alps! The terrain really resembles classic alpine massifs: beautiful ridge climbs, elegant snow slopes, rocky summits… It’s classic mountaineering, but in a completely pristine setting.
